Schierke is a village that is today part of the town of Wernigerode, in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It covers 40 sq km (15 sq mi) and has a population of around 750 people (2012 estimate).
The history of Schierke goes back to 1590, when it was first mentioned as Schiriken. It is situated in the valley of the river Bode within the Harz Mountain area. Today it sits on the rim of the Harz National Park and has developed itself has a sports and nature destination. From here, hikers can climb to the Brocken, the tallest mountain in the Harz region. Also accessible from Schierke is Wurmberg, the highest mountain in neighboring Lower Saxony.
How to go to Schierke
Schierke is located to the south of Braunschweig. From there, take Autobahn 395 heading south, then continue on Highway 6. Exit the highway at Wernigerode, then continue on Country Route L100 to reach Schierke.
