Speyer is a small city in
Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It covers 42.58 sq km (16.44 sq mi) and has a population of 50,000 people (2012 estimate). The city is on the west bank of the River Rhine to the south of
Ludwigshafen and Mannheim.

The main landmark in Speyer is its cathedral which looms over the city. Speyer Cathedral is today a World Heritage Site. There are also a number of other churches worth visiting as well as an old gate.
Speyer has a long history predating the arrival of the Romans. In fact, there is evidence of human habitation here going back five thousand years. The city however celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 1990.

How to go to Speyer
From Ludwigshafen and Mannheim, head south on Highway 9 to reach Speyer.
