Thale is a town in the Harz Mountains. It is within the Harz district, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The town is on the river Bode,m about 8 km to the west of Quedlinburg.
Thale dates back to an initial settlement that was established in the 19th century. The settlement grew into a village, then a town. By the 15th century, it had established an ironworks. The town was however greatly devastated during the Thirty Years' War between 1618 and 1648, and was completely destroyed in 1670. Nonetheless it saw a revival when a new ironworks was established there in 1686.
The discovery of the Hubertus Spring helped Thale develop as a tourist destination in the 19th century. The town became part of East Germany at the end of the Second World War until German reunification in 1990.
