Wernigerode is a picturesque town in the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, near the border with Lower Saxony.
Located on the river Holtemme, on the northern slopes of the Harz Mountains, Wernigerode is at the foot of the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz. It covers 170 sq km (65 sq mi) and has a population of 34,000 people (2012 estimate). The town in on the German Timber-Frame Road (
Deutsche Fachwerkstraße).
As with other towns in the area, Wernigerode became part of the Prussian Province of Saxony following the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. Following the Second World War, it was briefly part of the state of Saxony-Anhalt within East Germany before the abolishment of state boundaries for provinces. It was again part of Saxony-Anhalt after the state was restored following German reunification in 1990.

How to go to Wernigerode
From Braunschweig in Lower Saxony, take Autobahn 395 heading south till Vienenburg, then continue east on Highway 6 until you reach Wernigerode.
