Zwickau is a town on the southwestern part of Saxony, Germany. It covers 103 sq km (40 sq mi) and has a population of 93,000 people (2012 estimate). The town is a former regional seat of government. It is the birthplace of 19th century German composer Robert Schumann and the engineer who founded Audi, August Horch.
Zwickau has a history stretching back some nine hundred years. In the 14th century, it developed into a mining center for hard coal and silver ore. It was the first city in Europe to join the Lutheran Reformation. Martin Luther dedicated his treatise "On the Freedom of the Christian Man" to his friend Hermann Muehpfort in 1520.

Zwickau is the home of the Saxon automotive industry that gave birth to world-renowned brands of cars including the Audi, Volkswagen and even the Trabant. Volkswagen continues to be the biggest employer in town. The Volkswagen-Saxony company assembles the Golf, Passat and Phaeton at its plant in Zwickau-Mosel.
From a former mining center, Zwickau has transformed itself into an elegant town with well-preserved historic buildings.
How to go to Zwickau
Zwickau is located to the southwest of Chemnitz. From Chemnitz, take Autobahn 72 until Exit 11, then continue on S283 heading northwest to reach Zwickau.
