Europa Point is the southernmost section of Gibraltar. This area is beyond the Rock of Gibraltar. It is flat and overlooks the Straits of Gibraltar towards the Rif Mountains of Morocco. One can also view across the Bay of Gibraltar towards Spain. The notable buildings here include the lighthouse and two religious buildings - the new Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque and the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe.
The lighthouse at Europa Point is just one of several lighthouses in Gibraltar. It was built between 1838 and 1841 by Sir Alexander Woodford, the Governor of Gibraltar. It is the southernmost lighthouse operated by the Corporation of Trinity House, the official General Lighthouse Authority of England, Wales and other British territorial waters (not including Scotland and Northern Ireland).
