Alexandroupoli (Greek: Αλεξανδρούπολη) is a city in
Thrace, on the eastern part of
Greece. It covers 1,220 sq km (471 sq mi) and has a population of 66,000 people (2012 estimate).
Alexandroupoli is close to the border with Turkey. It was originally known as Dedeagach, which means "grandfather tree" in Turkish. When the Hellenic Republic was established, it was renamed Alexandroupoli in honor of King Alexander.
