The
Cave of Apocalypse on the
Island of Patmos is reputed to be where John the Apostle wrote the Book of Revelations, the last book of the Bible. Today it is a World Heritage Site in Greece. It is located along the road between the villages of Chora and Skala.
Also inscribed as a World Heritage Site is the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian. This Greek Orthodox monastery was founded in AD 1088 in the town of Chora. It is a pilgrimage site for Orthodox Greeks. The town of Chora grew around the monastic complex, and contains many buildings of religious as well as secular in nature.
The Cave of Apocalypse and the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, on the Island of Patmos were inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 23rd session of the World Heritage Committee held in Marrakesh, Morocco, on 29 November - 4 December, 1999.
