Delos is a World Heritage Site in the Cyclades archipelago, Greece. Located near Mykonos, Delos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. This was the island where, according to Greek mythology, the god Apollo was born. However, it was already a sacred site a thousand years before Olympian Greek mythology made it Apollo's birthplace.

Ruins and monuments on Delos point to human habitation from succeeding civilizations from the 3rd millennium BC through to the paleochristian era. Archaeological excavations revealed that the island has no productive capacity for food and only limited supply of water. Yet it thrived as a cosmopolitan Mediterranean port which, among others, had the largest slave market in the region. Delos was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 14th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Banff, Canada, on 7 - 12 December, 1990.
