The
Sanctuary of Asklepios is a shrine to the Greek god of medicine in the ancient city state of
Epidaurus, a World Heritage Site in the present-day region of Peloponnesos, Greece. The ancient city, on the Saronic Gulf, is near the modern town of Epidavros.
The cult of Apollo, which grew around the 6th century BC, became the official cult of Epidaurus, resulting in a few monuments, among them the temple of Asklepios, the Tholos and the Theatre. Dating from the 4th century BC, these are regarded as the purest masterpieces of Greek architecture. In the Sanctuary of Asklepios are ruins of ancient temples and hospitals, all related to the healing gods. They offer a glimpse into the ancient beliefs of the Greek and Romans in healing cults.
Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 12th session of the World Heritage Committee which met in Brasilia, Brazil, on 5 - 9 December, 1988.
