The historical part of the city of
Budapest, Hungary is considered one of the world's outstanding urban landscapes. Among the sights here include Banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, the Roman City of Aquincum and Andrássy Avenue.
Budapest traces its history to the Celtic settlement of Aquincum, which around AD 41 became a Roman military base. By the 2nd century, it had around 30,000 inhabitants. Modern-day Budapest grew out of the cities of Buda on the western bank of the Danube, and the city of Pest, on the eastern bank. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Among the highlights of the city includes Heroes' Square, the world's second largest synagogue, and the third largest Parliament building.
Budapest with the Banks of the Danube, Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, was inscribed as a World Heritage Site during the 11th session of the World Heritage Committee at Headquarters in Paris, France, on 7-11 December, 1987.
