Letterkenny is a city in the Province of Ulster, on the northwestern part of the Republic of Ireland. It is located on the banks of the River Swilly. The Sperrin Mountains are to the east of the city while the Derryveagh Mountains to the west.
Letterkenny is the main town in County Donegal, and is the main business centre of northwestern Ireland following the partition of Ireland in 1921. It is bordered to the east and south by the counties of Northern Ireland, County Londonderry, County Tyrone and County Fermanagh.
Letterkenny was established in the early 17th century as a market town. For much of its existence, it was a main town surrounding by farming areas. It was given town status following the partition of Ireland in 1922. It remains a small town that was given a big role when the main town of the area, Londonderry, became part of Northern Ireland.
