Agropoli is a town in the province of Salerno, in the
region of Campania in southern
Italy. Located on the Cilento coast facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, Agropoli covers 39 sq km (15 sq mi) and has a population of 21,000 people (2012 estimate).
The site where Agropoli is located has been inhabited since Neolithic times. It dates to the 6th century, when the Byzantines established it as a harbor town. It was ruled by the Byzantines until AD 882, when it fell to the Saracens.
Until the 19th century, Agropoli was a medieval town surrounded by walls. Since then its development has expanded outside the walls.
