Alghero (Catalan:
L'Alguer, Sardinian:
S'Alighèra, Sassarese: La Liéra) is a town in the province of Sassari, on the western coast of
Sardinia, Italy. It covers 224.43 sq km (86.65 sq mi) and has a population of 44,000 people (2012 estimate).
Although Italian is the official language, the local people in Alghero speak a number of other languages. Most predominant is the Catalan dialect, which came about because Catalan invaders once captured the town from the Genoese in 1353, and brought with them their culture and language. Although the Catalan conquerors were eventually ousted by the locals, somehow they left their dialect behind.
In addition to Catalan, Spanish also became an official language here before Italian did. That was in the 17th century. On top of it all, some of the people here speak Sardinian and some speak Sassarese. Sardinian is recognized as an official language on the island of Sardinia, holding co-official status with Italian. Sassrese can be described as somewhere between Corsican and Sardinian.
