Asti is a city in the province of the same name, in the region of
Piedmont, on the northwestern part of
Italy. Located 55 km to the east of
Turin, it covers 151.82 sq km (58.62 sq mi) and has a population of 76,000 people (2012 estimate).
The Asti area has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The town was one of the first free communes of Italy. Its golden age was in the 13th century, when it attained the peak of its economic and cultural splendor.
Today some parts of the ancient city walls of Asti still remain, particularly on the north side of the city. It also has a number of churches, the most important of which is the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, which was built in the 13th century over an older cathedral.
Asti is famous for the bare-back horse race, called the Palio di Asti, which dates back to the Middle Ages. In modern times, this race is held on the 3rd Sunday of September at the Piazza Alfieri.
