Bassano del Grappa is a city in the province of Vicenza, in the region of
Veneto, in northeastern
Italy. Bassano del Grappa today covers 46 sq km (18 sq mi) and has a population of 43,000 people (2012 estimate). Its urban area includes the surrounding communes of Campolongo sul Brenta, Cartigliano, Cassola, Conco, Marostica, Nove, Pove del Grappa, Romano d'Ezzelino, Rosà and Solagna.
Bassano del Grappa is probably most famous for its iconic bridge, the Ponte degli Alpini. It is a covered wooden pontoon bridge designed by Andrea Palladio in 1569.
The most famous son of Bassano del Grappa is artist Jacopo Bassano (1510-1592), whose surname comes from the town itself. Bassano del Grappa is also famous for producing an after-dinner drink called Grappa. It is made from discarded grape seeds, stalks and stems.
In modern times, Bassano del Grappa is the hometown of Renzo Rosso, who founded the Italian design company Diesel in 1978. The company is now based in nearby Breganze.
