Bergamo is a city in the region of
Lombardy, Italy. It is also the provincial capital of the eponymous province. Bergamo covers 39.6 sq km (15.3 sq mi) and has a population of 121,000 people (2012 estimate).
Bergamo is located at the foot of the Alps. The city was founded by the Celtic tribe of Cenomani, and was captured by the Romans in 49 BC. It was under the Venetian Republic from 1428 to 1797, when it came under the French rule until 1815, when it was assigned to the Austrian Empire. The Second Italian War of Independence made Bergamo part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1859.
Today Bergamo is noted for its music history. Among the musicians produced by Bergamo include Gaetano Donizetti, Anotnio Lolli, Gianandrea Gavazzeni and more. The city is also renowned for its folk dance called bergamask.
The modern city comprises two centers, namely the upper city (
Città alta) and lower city (
Città bassa), connected by a funicular train.

Bergamo
Bergamo is served by the Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport (BGY). It receives flights from
Alexandria,
Bucharest,
Casablanca,
Frankfurt,
Ibiza, Istanbul, Moscow, Timişoara and Tirana.
You can also reach Bergamo by train from
Milan. The journey takes between 30-40 minutes. There are also regular bus services from Milan. Bergamo is to the northeast of Milan. It is reached on the A4 motorway.
