Brunico (German:
Bruneck) is a German-speaking town in the province of South Tyrol, in the region of
Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, in
northern Italy. It covers 45 sq km (17 sq mi) and has a population of 15,000 people (2012 estimate).
Better known as Bruneck, Brunico lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Ahr and the Rienz. These two rivers join to form the Eisack in Brunico, which is also the largest town in the Puster Valley.
Brunico dates back to 1256, when it was founded by Prince-Bishop Bruno von Kirchberg, after whom it is named. Most of the town that we see today after from after the 1723 fire which destroye3d much of the old town. Brunico became part of Italy after the First World War, when South Tyrol fell to Italian forces. Today tourism is an important component of its economy. Every year in October, it holds the popular Stegener Market, a festive market that attracts tourists from all over.
