Cagliari is the capital of
Sardinia, Italy. Located on the southern coast of the island, it covers 85.45 sq km (32.99 sq mi) and has a population of 160,000 people (2012 estimate). Cagliari also has the biggest urban area in Sardinia, with a population of 480,000 people.
Human habitation in Cagliari has been traced back to ancient times. Its name was first formed in the 7th century BC, as Karalis. Over time, it was ruled by the Carthaginians and then the Romans, in 238 BC. It was already the capital of the island of Sardinia under the Romans, with its people having rights equal to Roman citizens.
Cagliari served as the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1324 to 1720 and again from 1798 to 1815. It became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. The city suffered heavy bombing during the Second World War, destroying much of the town, after which it was occupied by American forces.
Today Cagliari is undergoing a massive urban redevelopment project which includes the construction of a new iconic museum, the Betile Museum of Nuragic and Modern Art, an upscale beauty center on Poetto Beach, and a new public park with amphitheater and fountains.
