Cannobio is a town on the shore of Lago Maggiore, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in the region of
Piedmont, in
northern Italy. The town covers 51 sq km (20 sq mi) and has a population of 5,100 people (2012 estimate). It is close to the border with
Switzerland.
Human habitation in Cannobio is believed to have begun during the Roman period. The town is famous for the painting of the Virgin Mary which is said to have bled in 1522. After that event, a plague swept through the region but somehow the town escaped it. Today a procession is staged through the streets of Cannobio to celebrate the event. It takes places on 7 January every year.
