Italy that is composed of the historical regions of Emilia and Romagna. It covers 22,446 sq km (8,666 sq mi) and has a population of 4.4 million people. The region centers on its largest city and capital,
Bologna.
Geography of Emilia-Romagna
Emilia-Romagna faces the Adriatic Sea to the east. It is bordered by Veneto and Lombardy to the north, Piedmont to the west, Liguria to the southwest, Tuscany to the south and Marche to the southeast. Close to half of the region consists of low-lying plains. There are three peaks above 2,000 m in height, the tallest being Monte Cimone (2,165 m).

History of Emilia-Romagna
The region of Emilia-Romagna traces its history to Roman times. Emilia was named after the Roman road that passes through the area between Rome and northern Italy. Romagna was derived from the word for Rome itself. The area comprised numerous independent principalities until their union under the Kingdom of Italy from 1859 to 1861.
Administrative Divisions of Emilia-Romagna
Today Emilia-Romagna is composed of nine provinces namely Bologna, Ferrara, Forlì-Cesena, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Ravenna, Reggio-Emilia and Rimini.

Languages of Emilia-Romagna
Apart from standard Italian, the locals in Emilia-Romagna also speak Emiliano-Romagnolo, a Romance language that is also spoken in San Marino. It is today recognized by UNESCO as an endangered language.
Economy of Emilia-Romagna
Emilia-Romagna is a highly developed region with one of the highest quality of life indices in the country. It is home to a number of automobile companies including Ferrari, Meserati and Lamborghini. The region has also developed into a major cultural and tourist destination, with well-preserved Renaissance cities such as Modena, Parma and Ferrera.
