L'Aquila, a city in central Italy, is the capital of the Abruzzo region. It is also the capital of the province of L'Aquila. The name of the city means "the eagle". It is located in the valley of the Aterno river within sight of the Apennine Mountains.

L'Aquila served as the venue of the G8 summit in 2009, following the earthquake that happened there. The 6.3 magnitude quake struck on 6 April, 2009, damaging thousands of buildings in the city.
