Liguria is a coastal region in northwestern Italy. It is a popular tourist destination with many small, picturesque villages and towns and a rugged coastline dotted with beaches. It covers 5,422 sq km (2,093 sq mi) and has a population of 1.6 million people (2012 estimate). Its capital and main city is Genoa.

Geography of Liguria
Liguria forms a long stretch between the Ligurian Sea to the south and the Alps and Apennine mountains to the north. It is bordered by Tuscany to the southeast, Emilia-Romagna to the northeast, Piedmont to the north and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in France to the west.

Administrative Divisions of Liguria
Liguria is divided into four provinces. From west to east, they are Imperia, Savona, Genoa and La Spezia.

History of Liguria
Liguria has been inhabited since the Stone Age, based on remains of the Neanderthal Man discovered in Loano. It was conquered by the Romans during the reign of Emperor Augustus. The Romans built roads that helped the area develop, enabling a number of coastal towns to be established.

After the decline of the Romans, Liguria was controlled by the Byzantines, the Lombards, the Franks and the Normans, from the 4th to the 10th centuries. It became part of the Republic of Genoa from the 11th to the 15th centuries, during which time it grew into a substantial maritime power. When the power of the Genoese declined, Liguria was taken over by the French and the Milanese. In 1684, Liguria was occupied by the Piedmontese and Austrian troops. In 1805 it was annexed by the French Empire, absorbed into the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1814, and eventually the Kingdom of Italy.

Economy of Liguria
Liguria specialized in high-quality farm products such as flowers, wines and olive oil. It had a steel industry in the 1950s but this has declined in the 1980s. Tourism remains an important component of the economy.

The A10 is the motorway serving the length of Liguria. It is connected to the A6 motorway heading northwest, the A26 and the A7 heading northwards.
