Naples is a city in the Campania region in southern Italy. It is a city with a history going back 2,800 years, to when it was established by the Greeks, who named it Neapolis, meaning "new city". No longer new, Naples today is home to 2.25 million people, making it the third largest city in Italy. However, its metropolitan area with over 4 million inhabitants is the second biggest after Milan's.
Naples is a city known for its food, architecture, art and history. The cuisine of Naples is known as Neapolitan, and its famous dishes include Neapolitan ice cream, Neapolitan pizza, Neapolitan coffee and gelato, a fruit-based ice-cream.

Travel within Naples
To avoid the frenzied traffic in the streets, head underground. The Metropolitana di Napoli runs six subway lines in Naples, and is the most practical as well as safe form of transportation for tourists. You can buy a daily pass for €3.00 that allows you unlimited rides for the whole day. Alternatively a €1.00 ticket allows you to travel for the subsequent 90 minutes on as many lines as the time allows.
In addition to the subway, Naples is also served by the Funicolare cable cars managed by Metropolitana di Napoli, the trams and the buses.
