Trieste provides you an introduction to the city and seaport of Trieste, on the northeastern part of Italy. The city is surrounded on the south, east and north by the border of Slovenia. It is the capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and Triste province, and is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste. The city has a population of around 205,000 (2011 estimate).

The earliest human habitation in the area was before Roman times, when an Illyrian settlement was established there. Under the Romans, there was a colony called Tergeste around 177 BC. It was a flourishing center during the early Christian era, and after that, it became a Byzantine military outpost.

Trieste was part of the Habsburg Monarchy from 1382 to 1918. It was the fourth largest city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire behind Vienna, Budapest and Prague. Its integration into Italy following the First World War led to its cultural and commercial decline. For much of the Cold War period, it was a peripheral city at the very edge of Western Europe.

Today Trieste has revived itself, becoming the center of one of the richest regions of Italy, with a flourishing industry based on shipping, shipbuilding and finance.

Going to Trieste

The Ronchi dei Legionari International Airport is the gateway to Trieste. It is about 33 km to the north of the city center. There is a bus from the airport to the Trieste Bus Station, which is next to the railway station. The airport is also just off the A4 motorway which connects Trieste to Venice.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.

To get to know me better, do follow me on Facebook!
