Sestiere Castello is one of the six sestieri or neighborhoods of Venice. It is the largest as well as westernmost neighborhood of the city. It borders Sestiere Cannaregio to the northwest and Sestiere San Marco to west, and is surrounded by the Venetian Lagoon on the north, south and east.
Sestiere Castello comprises a number of islands including San Pietro di Castello, Isole Gemini, and Isola di Sant'Elena. It was named after the islands of San Pietro di Castello, which has been inhabited since the 8th century.

The main feature of Sestiere Castello is the naval dockyard, which developed on Isole Gemini. It is still functioning today, and is part of Arsenale, a complex of shipyards and armories that was once the largest in Europe.
Isola di Sant'Elena was originally separated from the rest of Sestiere Castello, but recent land reclamation has neared the distance to just a gap connected by three bridges.
The Rio de Palazzo separates Sestiere Castello from Sestiere San Marco. The New Prison was located on the Sestiere Castello, and prisoners were taken across the Bridge of Sighs to their trial at the Doge's Palace.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
