Sestiere Dorsoduro is one of the six sestieri, or neighborhoods, of Venice. In this flat swampy city, Dorsoduro includes the highest ground area of Venice. The name "dorsoduro" means "solid backbone". It refers to the hard subsoil on which the neighborhood was built.
The main part of the sestiere of Dorsoduro is bounded by
Sestiere Santa Croce and
Sestiere San Polo to the north, the Grand Canal to the northeast and the Giudecca Canal to the south. Across from the Grand Canal is
Sestiere San Marco.
Dorsoduro also includes the islands across the Giudecca Canal, namely the islands of Giudecca and Isola Sacca Fisola.
