Sestiere San Polo is one of the six sistieri or neighborhoods of Venice. Covering an area of 35 hectares (86 acres), it is the smallest neighborhood of the city.
Sestiere San Polo also happens to be the oldest neighborhood of Venice. It has been settled as early as the 9th century, when the rest of Venice was marshland in the lagoon. It is located on the western bank of the Grand Canal as it forms a curve bounded on the eastern side by
Sestiere Cannaregio and
Sestiere San Marco. San Polo is also bounded by
Sestiere Santa Croce to the northeast and
Sestiere Dorsoduro to the south.
The famous Rialto Bridge crosses the Grand Canal from the sestiere of San Polo to the sestiere of San Marco. It connects San Marco to the market site of Venice which has been established since 1097 The name Rialto refers not just to the bridge, but rather to the area itself. That section of Venice is well known for its palaces and residences. On the western end of the sestiere are a number of well-known churches.
