Drenthe is one of the provinces of the Netherlands. It covers 2,642 square kilometers of land area and 38 square kilometers of water. Drenthe has a population of about half a million people. It is bordered by Groningen to the north, Friesland to the west, Overijssel to the south and Germany to the east. The capital and largest city is Assen.
Drenthe comprises twelve municipalities, each of which comprises several towns and villages. The municipalities are Aa en Hunze, Assen, Borger-Odoorn, Coevorden, De Wolden, Emmen, Hoogeveen, Meppel, Midden-Drenthe, Noordenveld, Tynaarlo and Westerveld.
The people of Drenthe speaks the Drents language, though some towns and village mazy speak their own dialect of the language. Drents is a language in the Low Saxon group of languages.
