Flevoland is a province in the central part of the Netherlands. It stands on reclaimed land that was previously the Zuiderzee. The province was only established in 1986. It covers 1,419 square kilometers of land and 993 square kilometers of water. Flevoland has a population of around 400,000 people (2012 estimate). The capital is Lelystad while the largest city is
Almere.
Flevoland comprises six municipalities namely Almere, Dronten, Lelystad, Noordoostpolder, Urk and Zeewolde. The area was created following the flood of 1916, which resulted in a decision to enclose and reclaim the Zuiderzee. In 1932, the sea was completely sealed off, and the Zuiderzee became known as IJsselmeer, meaning lake at the end of the river IJssel.
