Friesland is a province on the northern part of the Netherlands. Part of the larger Frisia region, modern-day Friesland covers 3,349 square kilometers of land and 2,392 square kilometers of water. It has a population of around 650,000 people (2012 estimate). The capital is Leeuwarden.
The name Friesland is the Frisian spelling of the place, while in Dutch, it is spelled Fryslân. The Friesland Provincial Council resolved to accept the Frisian spelling in 1996. It is the largest Dutch province in total area while the third largest in terms of land area.
West Frisian is the language spoken in Friesland. The language is also spoken in some adjacent parts of Groningen, and is related to regional languages spoken in some parts of Germany.
