Gelderland is a province on the central eastern part of the Netherlands. Covering 4,971.76 square kilometers and 164.75 square kilometers of water, it is the largest province in the country in terms of land area. Gelderland has a population of around two million people. The capital is Arnhem while the two largest cities are Nijmegen and Apeldoorn. Other main cities in Gelderland include Ede, Doetinchem, Zutphen, Tiel, Wageningen and Zevenaar.
Gelderland is divided into three regions namely Veluwe in the north, Betuwe in the southwest and Achterhoek, also called Graafschap, in the east. Although many of its municipalities have been abolished or merged, it still has numerous municipalities, eahc comprising a few small villages.
