Vila Real District is a district in the northern part of Portugal. The district covers 4,328 sq km and has a population of about 225,000 (2011 estimate). Vila Real District is bordered by
Braga District to the west,
Porto District to the southwest,
Viseu District to the south,
Bragança District to the east and
Spain to the north.
Being a rugged region with low mountains, and historically remote, Vila Real District has suffered from the effects of emigration and aging, with many villages dwindling in population as the young move to bigger towns and cities in search of employment.
Vila Real District comprises 14 municipalities and 268 civil parishes. The district capital is Vila Real. The district is within the Norte Region.
