Belgorod is located on the Seversky Donets River, about 40 km from the border with Ukraine. The name Belgorod means "white city". This refers to the rich deposit of limestone in the area.
The history of Belgorod goes back to 1237, when it was documented as having been destroyed by Batu Khan. It is not clear whether that city was at the same located as present-day Belgorod, which was re-established in 1596 by order of Feodor Ioannovic to defend the southern borders of Russia.
Belgorod experiences a humid continental climate. July is the warmest month, when average high temperature rises to 25.1°C (77.2°F). Coldest month is January, with average low temperature of -11.1°C (12°F). In the 18th century, a local bishop, Ioasaph of Belgorod, became widely venerated, and was later made a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1911.
