Ivanovo (Russian: Ива́ново) is a city in Russia. The administrative center of Ivanovo Oblast, it spans over 104.8 sq km (40.5 sq mi) and has a population of 409,000 people (2012 estimate).
Ivanovo is traditionally known as the textile capital of Russia. It is also home fo the largest military airlift bases in the country, the Ivanovo Severny. Until 1932, the city was known as Ivanovo-Voznesensk, as it was created by merging the village of Ivanovo with the industrial town of Voznesensky Posad.
Textile production was the mainstay of the city's economy, particularly at the turn of the 20th century, when it was one of the biggest producers of textile in Europe, a position rivalled by Łódź, Poland.
Ivanovo had one of the earliest state councils, or Soviet, in Russia. It was organized in 1905, the same year that the St Petersburg Soviet was formed. This was during Imperial Russia, before the Soviet Union was created. Later, after the Russian Revolution of 1917, came out with a program called "soviet government", which they described as a "higher type of state" or "higher form of democracy".
