Kislovodsk (Russian: Кислово́дск) is a spa city in the North Caucasian region of Russia, between the Black Sea and the Capsian Sea. It is within the federal subject of Stavropol Krai. The city occupies 41.5 sq km (16 sq mi) and has a population of 128,500 people (2012 estimate).
Kislovodsk was founded in 1803 as a military outpost of the Grand Duchy of Russia. The mineral springs of the area has been recognized by then, and the founding of the town helped in its further development. The name Kislovodsk means "sour water", a description of the Kislovodsk's waters which are said to have therapeutic properties. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the spa attracted numerous Russians of the upper echelon, among them Russian aristocrats, artists and musicians.
