It services as the administrative center for Krasnodar Krai. The city covers 841.36 sq km (324.85 sq mi) and has a population of 745,000 people (2012 estimate). Krasnodar was founded in 1794. It was originally called Yekaterinodar, which means "Catherine's Gift", in recognition of the grand of land in the Kuban region to the Black Sea Cossacks, and at the same time, in honor of Saint Catherine the Martyr, the patron saint of the city. Following the Russian Revolution, it was renamed Krasnodar in 1920. The new name, meaning "Red Gift" is a reflection of the political atmosphere of the time. During the Second World War, Krasnodar was occupied by the Nazis from 12 August, 1942 until 12 February, 1943. It was severely devastated in the war but was rebuilt thereafter. Today Krasnodar serves as the economic hub of southern Russia. It has a highly developed retail sector, with the highest number of shopping malls per capita in Russia.
