Novorossiysk (Russian: Новоросси́йск; Adyghe: Цӏэмэз) is Russia's main port on the Black Sea. Located in the federal subject of Krasnodar Krai, it covers 853 sq km (329 sq mi) and has a population of 242,000 people (2012 estimate).
Located in Tsemess Bay on the Black Sea, Novorossiysk has been inhabited since the time of ancient Greece. Over the centuries various powers have ruled or traded in the area. The area was under the Ottoman Empire until 1829, when it was ceded to Russia following the Russo-Turkish War.
Under Russian control, Novorossiysk grew rapidly. It was granted city status in 1866 and was made the capital of the Black Sea Governorate, the smallest governorate in the Russian Empire. During the Second World War, it was occupied by the Nazis from 10 September, 1942 until 16 September, 1943. The heroic defense of the port by its sailors led to Novorossiysk being awarded the title of Hero City in 1973.
In 2003, a new naval base was planned for the Black Sea Fleet in Novorossiysk. Construction of the base is expected to be completed in 2012, in time for the Russian Navy to transfer its port facilities from Sevastopol, where the lease expires in 2017.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
