Pereslavl-Zalessky was founded by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1152 and was originally called Pereyaslavl. Over the course of history, it was devastated a number of times due to Mongol raids as well as Polish invasion. In 1688, Peter the Great built his fun flotilla, a fleet of boats for his own amusement on Lake Pleshcheyevo. The boats became the precursor of the Russian Naval fleet. One of the original model boats is kept in the "Little Boat" museum here.
