Perm (Russian: Пермь) is a city on the banks of the Kama River in western Russia. It is on the European side of the Ural Mountains. The city covers 799.68 sq km (308.76 sq mi) and has a population of 992,000 people (2012 estimate).

Perm began as a village called Yegoshikha around the 17th century. It grew into a city when Peter the Great decided to develop the Ural region. Under the direction of the tsar, Vasily Tatishchev founded Perm and Yekaterinburg.

By the 19th century, Perm had become a major trade and industial center in the Ural region. It had factories producing munitions, paper, phosphoric and other material. Due to its importance, it was fought over during the Russian Civil War, with the White Army taking the city in 1918, but the Red Army recapturing it the following year. During this period of turbulence, Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich was executed, as was Andronic Nikolsky, the Archbishop of Perm. He was later honored as one of Russian's New Martyrs and Confessors in 2000.

Today Perm is an industrial city in the Ural region. Among the industries here include machinery, oil production, chemical, petrochemical, oil refinery and timber.
