Ryazan (Russian: Рязань) is a city in Ryazan Oblast, in western Russia. It covers 223.7 sq km (86.4 sq mi) and has a population of 525,000 people (2012 estimate). It is situated on the Oka River, about 196 km (122 mi) to the southeast of Moscow.
Ryazan began as a Slavic settlement in the 9th century. This was when Slavic tribes began encroaching into areas previously occupied by Finnic peoples. The settlement was mentioned for the first time in 1095, when it was called Pereslavl. It was only given the name Ryazan in 1778.
The economy of Ryazan is supported by the electronics and oil refining industry. It is regarded as the country's electronics hub, as some 25% of its population are employed in this industry. The most famous company in Ryazan is Plazma, which produces plasma television panels, LCD screens, gas lasers and medical lasers.
Visiting Ryazan
Ordinary trains from Moscow take four hours to reach Ryazan while the faster, more comfortable express trains take a little less than three hours.
