Tolyatti (Russian: Толья́тти) is a city in Samara Oblast, Russia. Covering 314.8 sq km (121.5 sq mi), Tolyatti has a population of 720,000 people. This makes it the largest city in the Russian Federation that does not serve as an administrative center for a federal subject.
Tolyatti traces its history to 1737, when a fortress was built in the area to strengthen the position of the Grand Duchy of Russia. It was known as Stavropol, but to distinguish it from the city of
Stavropol, it was called Stavropol-on-Volga. The city was again renamed, to Tolyatti, in 1964. This was in honor of Palmiro Togliatti, the secretary of the Italian Communist Party.
