Tyumen (Russian: Тюме́нь) is a city in Siberia, Russia. It is located on the Tura River, about 2,144 km (1,332 mi) east of Moscow. The city covers 235 sq km (91 sq mi) and has a population of 582,000 people (2012 estimate). It is the biggest city and administrative center of Tyumen Oblast.
Tyumen dates to 1586, when Tsar Feodor I ordered the construction of a fortress to strengthen Russia's eastward expansion. This makes Tyumen one of the oldest Russian settlements in Siberia. It is located on the historical trade route between Central Asia and the Volga region. Due to its strategic location, the site has been contested by various groups over the centuries. In the early days, Tyumen had a strong military presence to counter constant attacks by Tatar and Kalmyk raiders.
Tyumen developed in the 19th century as linkages and improvement to its infrastructure helped grow its population. When the Trans-Siberian Railway was built in 1885, Tyumen was located at the easternmost railhead, where goods were transferred from the trains to the cargo boats.
During the Russian Civil War, Tyumen was initially controlled by the White Army until it fell to the Red Army on 5 January, 1918. Under the Soviet Union, it developed into a major industrial center. At the start of the Second World War, the body of deceased Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin was secretly brought to Tyumen for safekeeping, due to fear that Moscow would fall to the Nazis.
In the 1960s, Tyumen benefited from its location as a railway junction when oil and gas were discovered in Tyumen Oblast. Its population has grown and declined according to the economic situation of the country.
Visiting Tyumen
Flights connecting Moscow with Tyumen take about two and a half hours.
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
