Voronezh appeared in the Hypatian Codex of 1177 though archaeological evidence shows that human settlement in the area goes back to the Stone Age. According to local history, the present city was founded by Tsar Feodor I as a fortress in 1585. The city of Voronezh was named after the Voronezh River, which in turn was named after a place in the Principality of Chernigov.

Voronezh was of modest significance until the 17th century, when Peter the Great built a dockyard there. This was where the fleet of the Azov Flotilla was constructed. It was the first ever fleet ever built in Russia, and it helped Voronezh develop into a sizable town. For a while, Voronezh was the largest city in Southern Russia.

Voronezh was the scene of heavy fighting during the Second World War. The city was completely under Nazi control from 24 July, 1941 until 25 January, 1943, by which time some 93% of its buildings have been destroyed. Since then, Voronezh has been entirely rebuilt. In the 1960s it was the home of the Voronezh Aviation factory that produced the Tupolev Tu-144 supersonic aircraft.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.

To get to know me better, do follow me on Facebook!
