Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk has been known by several different names through its history. It was originally known as Vladimirovka when it was first established as a Russian penal camp in 1882. When it fell under Japanese occupation following the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05, it was given the name Toyohara. After the Second World War, with Sakhalin island reverting to Soviet rule, it was renamed Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is today a hub for oil extraction in eastern Siberia. Major oil companies such as ExxonMobil and Shell maintain a presence here. However there has been criticisms that the oil wealth has not trickled down to prosper the local economy. This manifests in the oblast having one of the highest rates of juvenile delinquency in Russia.
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk experiences a humid continental climate. Summers here are mild while winters cold. It receives more rain compared to the Russian interior and the summers here are cooler than on the Russian mainland.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
