The Principality of Asturias is an autonomous community of Spain located on the northern part of the country facing the Cantabrian Sea. It is formerly the Kingdom of Asturias during medieval times. Asturias is 10,604 sq km (4,094 sq mi) and has a population of slightly over a million people (2011 estimate). The regional capital is Oviedo while the biggest city is Gijón. The region is divided into counties called comarcas, of which there are eight.

Asturias borders Cantabria to the east, Castilla y León to the south and Galicia to the west. Within this region is the Pico de Europa National Park, with some of the most spectacular mountains in the country. Along the rugged coastline of Asturias are numerous beaches, coves and sea caves.
The Asturias region of Spain is renowned for its seafood. It is also popular for its cheeses, its apple cider and specialty dishes such as the stew fabada asturiana. Compared to other regions of Spain, Asturias lags behind economically, due to a decline in the steel industry, a mainstay of its economy. However this has somewhat been replaced by a service industry that helps to reduce its rate of unemployment.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
