Avilés it is one of the main cities in the
Principality of Asturias in northern
Spain. It covers 27 sq km (10 sq mi) and has a population of 84,000 people (2012 estimate).
The history of Avilés can be traced to the Stone Age, based on evidence from archaeological excavations in the area. Nevertheless a proper town or settlement only emerged in the Middle Ages. It was granted market right in 1479.
Avilés was a walled medieval city until 1818, when its city walls were demolished to enable growth to spill out. Today Avilés is one of the industrial centers of northern Spain.
