Although the area has been inhabited as early as 3,000 BC, Benidorm remained a small village as recently as the 1960s. And then it began to develop as a tourist resort. Over the next few decades it began to put up holiday apartments and skyscrapers that have since changed the city's skyline. As a result, the city is often called the Manhattan of Spain. Indeed no other city along the Costa Blanca has such a skyline. In fact (according to the Urban Age project), Benidorm has more high-rise buildings per capita than anywhere else in the world.
Most of the tourists to Benidorm come from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, the majority on package holidays. The tallest hotel in Benidorm, the Gran Hotel Bali, is also the tallest hotel in Europe since 2002. It was also the tallest skyscraper in Spain until it was surpassed by the Cuatro Torres Business Area tower of Madrid in 2008.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
