Huelva is a city in the autonomous region of
Andalusia in southern
Spain. It covers 149 sq km (58 sq mi) and has a population of 150,000 people (2012 estimate).
Huelva is located on the coast of the Gulf of Cadiz, where the river Odiel meets the river Tinto. The city is not far from the border with
Portugal. Its history may have dated back to the time of the Phoenicians. At that time, it was known as Onoba. The settlement was later ruled by the Romans, and even today, you can find Roman ruins in the city.
Huelva has the oldest football club in Spain. The Recreativo del Huelva was founded in 1889 by workers of the British mining company, Rio Tinto Group. The city has a port divided into two areas, the Inner Port and the Outer Port. The Outer Port, with six wharves, is the main port of Huelva.
