Human habitation in Ibiza goes back to the Phoenician period, around 654 BC, when Phoenician settlers established a port here called Ibossim, in honor of their deity Bes. The settlement became known as Ebusus to the Romans. When the Greeks arrived here, they called the group of islands comprising Ibiza and Formentera Pityûssai, for which is derived Pityuses.

Today Ibiza is one of the major tourist destinations in Spain. It is famous for its often riotous nightlife particularly in Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni. The main language spoken on the island is Catalan, but Spanish is widely used as well. Despite it being a major vacation island, large sections of Ibiza are today given to protection as a World Heritage Site. The Ibiza World Heritage Site was inscribed by UNESCO in 1999 to recognize the biodiversity and culture of the island.
